Kalakala move delayed until Sunday

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER STAFF

The streamlined ferry Kalakala, headed for a berth at Neah Bay, is now expected to leave Seattle's Lake Union at 10 a.m. Sunday, a day later than planned.

Dan Harris, attorney for owner Steve Rodrigues, said yesterday that Rodrigues needed an extra day to hire an additional tugboat to maneuver the old ferry through the Ballard locks. It will reach the Fremont Bridge in about 15 minutes, the Ballard Bridge in another 15 minutes and arrive at the locks by 11 or 11:30 a.m.

The trip to Neah Bay will take 42 hours, with arrival expected at mid-day Tuesday. Seattle Ferry Service has canceled a special Kalakala tour scheduled for Saturday but will provide views of the Kalakala during regular Lake Union tours Sunday. Argosy Cruises did not schedule any charters for the Kalakala move.
