Litigation, Arbitration, Mediation We handle litigation and arbitration in courts and tribunals across the United States and around the world. We are particularly well known for representing United States and non-U.S. clients in transnational disputes. Though we seek favorable settlement whenever possible, we are unrelenting in prosecuting and defending our clients' positions through trial, if necessary. Be it arbitration in Russia, litigation in Korea, or settlement negotiations in Shanghai, we have the contacts and the experience to get the job done. International Dispute Resolution — Even more complex Commercial litigation is almost always complicated. International litigation usually has its own, additional, special problems. We are knowledgeable about the special factors in international disputes and we have the skills and experience to represent our clients successfully in international litigation and arbitration, both in the United States and abroad. We are often called upon to speak on these issues at conferences and in the media. We understand how the traditions and cultures of a country can impact the results of a case just as much as a country's procedural or substantive law. We understand how foreign witnesses can affect both the timing and the tenor of litigation. We understand how the ability to collect on a claim or a judgment can vary from country to country. Most importantly, we know how to analyze the many factors that go into determining whether to pursue or defend an international claim, where to bring it and how to bring it. We also know how to combine the systems of various countries to achieve results for our clients that might not be possible within only one country's court system. For instance, we have used the American courts to discover information about opposing parties for use in foreign litigation, since foreign courts do not usually permit the far reaching discovery allowed in the United States. We often use foreign courts to seize assets that could not be seized in the United States. International Dispute Resolution — Contacts count We have developed a comprehensive referral network of attorneys and other experts around the world. Because we bring repeat business, we almost always are able to secure much better rates for these attorneys than if our clients approached these foreign law firms directly. China, Korea, Vietnam, Russia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France, Spain, Mexico We pride ourselves on conflict resolution abilities involving emerging markets with developing court systems. Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Vietnam, Liberia, the Cape Verde Islands, North Korea, and the Gambia are just some of the more exotic legal systems in which we have worked to resolve client problems. We are particularly well known for our dispute resolution work in Asia and in Europe. Our attorneys have worked on hundreds of legal matters involving China, Japan, Korea, Russia, Poland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France and Spain. We have a Russian Law Specialist with 15 years of Russian law experience who recently graduated from law school in the United States and we involve her in every matter touching on Russia and on Eastern Europe. Her knowledge of the Russian and Eastern European legal systems has proven invaluable to our clients. We have a lawyer with more than 25 years of Chinese legal experience who spends most of his time in China and who previously taught Chinese law at the University of Washington Law School and international law (in Chinese) at Beijing University Law School. Two of our attorneys began their careers working for international law firms in Asia. We also have a German and Spanish licensed attorney who practiced in both Germany and Spain before coming to the United States and who has case handling experience on matters throughout Europe. Her skills and experience enable us to bring claims against companies in Europe and South America and to give valuable assistance to European and South American companies in their disputes here in the United States. Within our international litigation practice, we have carved out niches in international debt and judgment collection, internet fraud/internet litigation/internet credit card processor litigation, international bankruptcy, and international admiralty/maritime litigation. We also have considerable experience litigating Jones Act maritime injury claims.
